Undara Experience offers a series of packages including tours of the Undara Lava Tubes and other areas of interest in the Gulf Savannah region. Coach transfers and self-drive or self-drive/hire car options are available as indicated.

Savannahlander. The popular ‘Savannahlander’ train travels the original 90 year old rail line that serviced the pioneering mining towns of Forsayth, Einasleigh and Mt Surprise.

Slowing and stopping regularly, there are plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph the flora, fauna and unique geological features encountered on this historic journey.

strong>Cobbold Gorge. One attraction not to be missed is Cobbold Gorge, created by nature over the past 135 million years. Countless wet seasons have spilled torrents of water through the narrow ravines, carving out deep gorges and permanent waterholes at the foot of spectacular towering cliffs. The gorge is a perfect habitat for native animals, including occasional sightings of the harmless freshwater crocodile.

Package Details

For those contemplating self-drive options, the road to Undara is fully sealed and the journey can be travelled comfortably and safely by conventional vehicle. Travel times are 4 hours from Cairns, 5 hours from Townsville and 2 hours from Georgetown.

Please note that all prices are based on twin share, in Australian dollars and GST inclusive. Reservations are essential. Single room supplements may apply. Prices are valid from April 1st 2008 to 31st March 2009.

3 Day Outback Experience

Explore the accessible outback at a holiday pace, enjoy authentic outback hospitality, discover the Undara Lava Tubes and meet Aussie Wildlife in its bush home (all times are approximate).

Day One: Travel from the West along the Savannah Way, or from the East coast onto Tropical North Queensland’s Outback region, known as the Gulf Savannah. On arrival at Undara Experience settle in and relax, or take one of the many self guided walking trails, followed by dinner and an evening campfire activity. Stay overnight in restored railway carriage accommodation. Lunch and dinner included.

Day Two: Awaken your tastebuds with Bush Breakfast at the Ringers Camp to the accompaniment of the morning bird chorus. Then join your Savannah Guide for a fascinating Half Day tour of the lava tubes followed by an evening Wildlife at Sunset tour. Evening campfire activity, then overnight in the carriages. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day Three: Rise to Bush Breakfast. Day at leisure, perhaps take time to explore the local area on one of the many self guided walks or perhaps take a walk to the One Hundred Mile Swamp to view the array of birdlife. Afternoon departure to Cairns from Undara Experience. Breakfast and lunch included.

3 Day Outback Explorer

Travel the Savannah Way and see the Gulf Savannah. From any direction, Undara Experience is the perfect base from which to explore. (all times are approximate)

• Undara Experience is an approved destination for hired motor homes. Allow 4 hours from Cairns, 5 hours from Townsville and 1 hour from Mt Surprise. (Road access and self-drive information)
• Free time to enjoy resort facilities including marked walking tracks, swimming pool, bird watching, a snooze in the shade
• Self cater in practical camp kitchens or you may prefer to dine in Fettler’s Iron Pot Bistro

• Day at leisure, after check out you are welcome to park in the day visitors car park and continue to enjoy Undara Experience’s facilities until you recommence your journey.

Day One: On arrival at Undara Experience settle into shady bush surrounds with abundant wildlife. Rejuvenate in the peace and quiet, enjoy a refreshing dip in the resort pool or take one of the many bush walking trails. Free evening activity conducted with a Savannah Guide, program changes nightly. Stay in a powered van site in the shady camp grounds. Excellent central amenities, practical camp kitchens and individual campfire pits (firewood available for purchase).

Day Two: Meet your Savannah Guide for a fascinating Half Day Lava Tube tour later followed by an evening Wildlife at Sunset tour. Evening campfire activity and stay overnight in a powered van site.

Day Three: Day at leisure, perhaps take time to explore the local area on one of the many self guided walks or perhaps take a walk to the One Hundred Mile Swamp to view the array of birdlife. Experience the Reef, Rainforest and Outback. See it all in one day.

Departing Cairns approximately 7.00am, your scenic flight takes in the islands and cays of the Great Barrier Reef and the magnificent rainforests near the Tully Gorge and Koombaloomba Dam. From there you’ll fly out into the vast expanse of the Outback called the Gulf Savannah. You will fly over the Undara volcanic crater and the Lava Tubes before touching down at the private airfield of Undara Experience.

Join your Savannah Guide for a fascinating Half Day Lava Tube tour. They will share their extensive knowledge of the Lava Tubes as well as the history of early settlement and the diverse flora and fauna of this region. Enjoy a Buffet Lunch at the Lodge before your return plane departure back to Cairns.
