From Townsville via Charters Towers
The drive from Townsville to Undara is 512km via this inland route on sealed roads and takes approximately 6½ hours excluding detours. Travel from Townsville to Charters Towers, along the Flinders Hwy – 130kms.
Charters Towers: Once the second largest city in Queensland, Charters Towers was founded on an abundance of gold. The city centre is a living museum of heritage architecture represented in the quaint old pubs and local museum. Experience working history at the 1800’s Venus Battery and enjoy modern entertainment at the World Theatre. Travel from Charters Towers to Greenvale, along the Gregory Development Rd – 193kms.
Greenvale: For 20 years this was the township that served Greenvale Nickel Mine. Now known as the “Outback Oasis”, Greenvale has all the amenities for a comfortable stay whilst exploring the surrounding countryside. Visit Jervoise Station to experience life on a cattle station, about 55kms from Greenvale. Travel from Greenvale to the Lynd Junction, along the Gregory Development Rd – 52km.
The Lynd Junction: A good place to refuel and take a refreshment break.
Travel from the Lynd Junction to Undara Lava Lodge. This entails 93km along the Kennedy Highway. Next turn left onto the Gulf Development Road. It is 33km to the Undara Lava Lodge from here. Turn here onto the Gulf Development Rd and head towards Mount Surprise.
18km along this road, is the sign-posted turn-off to Undara. Turn left and travel for 14kms on a fully sealed road right up to our door step at the Undara lodge. PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY!
