Undara Experience’s Opera in the Outback in 2008

THE TEN SOPRANOS

The Evening In Words

As the afternoon sun began it’s descent and the eucalypt shadows grew long, activity around the bar increased. There was a gentle buzz that quickly became a hive of activity as the audience gathered for the pre-show drinks. Teased with a few samples from the Hardy’s Wines rep and a plate of cheeses and crackers the bar staff were flat out as champagne corks made their distinctive sound above the increasing hubbub. Busses arrived from Mt Surprise as the line slowly grew at the outdoor amphitheatre in preparation for the main event. Amid the warm glow and cooling temperatures of the Savannah bush the Ten Sopranos made their grand entrance, stately gliding down the path on onto the stage to enthusiastic applause.

With all 10 ladies on stage the sound erupted like the nearby lava flows some 190 thousand years ago. The following 40 minutes had a varied repertoire of songs, some solos, a duet or two, one memorable highlight a delightful cat fight on stage between Joanna and Kylie and then the complex harmonies of ten well practiced voices reaching the highs and lows of the sopranos range. Intermission and the bar staff once again earnt their keep as people spoke of their favourite songs so far. The second half of the performance began under the stars, but the stage lights shone brightly on the talented performers. Penny Pavlakis showed us why she leads this group with vocal power enough to stun everyone in hearing. She brought forth some well known operatic favourites, even with a little audience participation thrown in, this is certainly no usual opera! The finale left us all exhausted, not one member of the audience not wanting to join in the applause.

The visual was almost as breath-taking as the sounds as ball gowns of perfectly different colours lit the stage. Ten beautiful women under the stars of a warm Undara night, it’s going to be hard to beat next year!
