Two Men In The Top End

The six-part series, in which Flannery and Doyle travel 4000kilometres from Cooktown to Broome, kicks off on the subject of the relentless pressure to develop the coast around Cooktown, where the deservedly cynical twosome listen to the promises of an excited local burgher that any projects will be appropriate in scale and sympathetic to the environment. It’s a pity the Bismarck isn’t along for the ride – the majority of the journey is undertaken in a hybrid car, which is certainly less romantic a notion but allows for easier storage of the champagne – but there’s plenty of their signature laconic style for fans.

Levi makes it into the Cairns Eye
“It is at this time of the tour I like to remind you all that I am being paid to do this,” quips Levi Barnes, a young tour guide at Undara Experience situated on savannah woodlands about 275km southwest of Cairns. Levi is standing on top of Sunset Bluff, a small rocky hill a few kilometres from Undara Lodge, where he has brought us for the Sunset Tour on this brisk, July evening. He is leading a toast of champagne and orange juice, and passing around the cheese and bikkies.
